What to look for when visitng a Montessori School?
Unfortunately, there are cases where you may find a school not fully embracing the method (but rather utilizing the name) and it may seem “not right”, it is important to recognize these flags and decide what you feel is best for your family.
You are correct in assuming not all Montessori schools are equal (or even reputable). As this can be a difficult path to navigate, our suggestion to parents first and foremost is to tour the schools (during school hours). There is a lot that can be learned from seeing the classrooms in action. With that being said, some additional key points to look for in your search would be;
a) Montessori School Affiliation to a reputable Montessori organization (AMS, MACTE, IMC, IMS)
b) Mixed age classrooms (ages: 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, 12-15, 15-17)
c) Following a Montessori pedagogy/method/curriculum (not state standards/common core/UPK)
d) Incorporating peace and a strong cultural emphasis interwoven throughout all areas of the curriculum (Math, Language, Science, & the Arts).
e) Montessori Certified and experienced teachers.
The Montessori method is a child lead approach that provides children with opportunities to explore their interests in a prepared environment; designed to not only encourage independence but grow their knowledge and understanding.
